Entrance and study space at ÅA Business School

Hello everybody!

Here is a little collage from Handelshögskolan / Business School of Åbo Akademi! In the lower pic you can see the sign upon entering the building. Once inside, you need to make a decision (the stairs!) whether to go a few steps down to the café area, or up to the study rooms and lecture halls. There are also some open study spaces and tables for doing group work in the lobby. We are currently trying to figure out how to create more such places where students can meet and study together.

Best wishes from Turku/Åbo,
Maria

  1. Hi Maria, How many students do you have? I don´t work as a teacher but I had my internship at a small school. There is plenty of areas where the students can sit. In some places there are high tables with "barchairs"(saves space) and in the corridors small couches with coffeetables. In the larger common spaces the students can sit by round tables.

  2. Hi Ann! In our business school there are about 600 students (some however, may be registered as students but only spend a little time in the physical building). We take in about 100-120 new students each year.

I like the idea with "bar chairs", definitely something we could also consider! The sofas became an issue at some point because of fire safety regulations, but now we have been able to re-introduce some of them (new sofas that are made for public spaces and meet the safety requirements).
