This is a photo of a hotel! I work for a private training company, Inspire Education, as a Trainer/Assessor. I teach the national standard qualification for trainers in the VET sector, the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. I have a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Diploma of VET and Bachelor of Arts. I am now about halfway through my Graduate Diploma of Adult and Vocational Education. I am doing one subject per semester.
The company that I work for has a head office in Brisbane (Australia’s third largest city) but I am based in Sydney (Australia’s largest city) and travel to major cities across Australia for face-to-face classes with classes of 8-20 learners aged anywhere between 18 and 80!
We rent training rooms in hotels and training centres. This week I am in Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia. It's about a 2-hour flight from Sydney. I am staying in another hotel just around the corner. The main train station is just across the road.
Most of the time, the venues we rent are in the centre of the city for easy access via public transport for learners. I often have learners who have travelled very far (up to 8 hours from their home) to come and do the week-long course to start their qualification.

  1. Hi James. After your week of training what do you require of your participants to provide evidence of competency?
Are your participants usually employed as trainers and assessors or are they looking to gain work in this field?

    1. Hi Gillian, thanks for the message!
The week of training only gets them through about half of the course. They don't actually submit anything to me during the week. All the projects that they have been working on (session plans, assessment validations, etc) are scanned and submitted online via our portal and marked by an assessor. Usually I don't assess the online stuff as I am in class.
There's a good combination of participants already working in this field, coming from a corporate training environment or wanting to move into the field.
I'm actually keen to develop some kind of smartphone app that would allow the learners' evidence to be gathered as a portfolio. Keen to explore this into managing ongoing professional development and currency.
      Cheers :)
