Photo 1
Hi to everyone.
My name is Gillian and I work for a small Private Registered Training Organisation (RTO) called River Murray Training (RMT). In Australia we have a public training provider (TAFE) which is subsidised by the government like public schools, and private training providers who charge a fee like a private school. In Australia you need to be registered to provide training in accredited qualifications, and the registration process is very strict and monitored regularly by audits. We are registered to deliver 56 qualifications.
I manage, train and assess in the Food Processing and Wine program areas, including trade level qualifications, pre-employment programs and workplace trainers and assessors. Students who complete their Certificate III in Wine Industry Operations are qualified as Supervisors or Leading Hands in one of six disciplines: Cellar Operations, Viticulture, Bottling & Packaging, Laboratory, Warehousing or Cellar Door Sales.
The first photo I posted shows our head office which is in the Riverland in rural South Australia, and is mainly used as an administration centre, with a small computer training suite. I work from a home office in Adelaide with a Personal Assistant. All my training is conducted in the workplace, so I travel to the enterprise and deliver training on site.
The second two photos are examples of two wineries where I conduct training. The larger enterprises have their own training rooms equipped with data projectors and whiteboards. Students from smaller workplaces join the classes. The great advantage is that we can access the workplace to check out the vineyards, cellars and bottling facilities to make the training relevant and work focused. All training is customised using enterprise policies and procedures.
And yes! It's a tough job, but someone has to do it! :-)

How interesting. What is your earlier profession?
ReplyDeleteSounds awesome, Gillian. I come to Adelaide intermittently for work. Was there last week. I start with a new company (Academy of Interactive Entertainment) on 16th Nov and we have a campus on Grenfell St, maybe I can accompany you on a site visit ;-) are you doing Grad Dip AVE?

ReplyDeleteHi Gillian,
ReplyDeleteBut it sounds like as if you like your job! Could you do your profession also in other countries? How old are your students?
Thank you Gillian for your post!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to taste some of your wines! I know the taste of Riesling and Gewürztraminer quite well, (my father in Germany likes these grapes very much), and I once tasted them in Canada. It was interesting how much the taste was similar, but still different, I guess due to the different soil we have on different continents!
Thank you for participating!
