Photo 8

This last photo is a poster in my training room. This last semester at university, I have been focusing on reflective practice and trying to better my own practice through understanding the perspectives of others. I have read some of Stephen Brookfield’s literature surrounding critical reflection and have now implemented some basic strategies into my pedagogy so I can refocus learning based on the learners’ needs. My learners answer these three questions anonymously on a piece of paper at the end of each day, and they leave this at the door as they leave. I then review them so I can use them as a revision for the following morning.

  1. Hi James! Thank you for sharing! I think this is a very efficient way to get feedback on ones teaching. In Sweden, many schools nowadays use ICT-tools, like Socrative
http://www.socrative.com/ - the students have laptops or smartphones. I like Socrative as you get the 'voices'/comments from the students anonymously and everybody can see each others comments. Have you tried some ICT-tools?

    1. Thanks for the reply, Ingrid. I actually stole this little one from Susanne from the unit I did with her over this last semester. A lot of my learners are from "trades" backgrounds and not always proficient with technology. In saying that, I also have some learners that are very good at using technology so there is a big mix. This is just an informal exercise I do. I also do formal surveys each week using "SurveyMonkey", and our organisation uses the analytics to provide weekly reports. Thanks for the tip about Socrative and I'll check it out :-)

  2. Hi James. It seems be a nice way of feedback. Can you see if there is a pattern in they students answer? How does it improve your way of teaching?

    1. Hi Mia, Yes I really enjoy it. There's definitely patterns that emerge and this allows me to see what they enjoy learning about, what I need to spend time revising with them and what to focus the learning on. It's great to gather them also over a number of weeks to see if I have managed to capture the sentiment being expressed in the reflections.
